Members of the Strategy Working Group

The Strategy Working Group (SWG), which will work in parallel to the TTF, comprises 9 members and will be co-chaired by Jinghai Li (ICSU Vice-President) and Saths Cooper (ISSC Vice-President), who will both also sit on the Transition Task Force (TTF). This linkage between the two groups is designed to ensure that strategy and governance work of the transition planning process is closely connected and mutually reinforcing. The SWG will meet for three days at the end of January 2017 and again towards the end of May, as well as working via teleconferences and email correspondence.

Sergio Adorno

Sérgio ADORNO is Full Professor at the Department of Sociology and the Director of the Center for the Study of Violence of the University of São Paulo since 2000 (NEV/USP, www.nevusp.org). He was also: (a) Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy, Languages and Human Sciences at USP, (2012-2016); (b) Coordinator of the UNESCO Chair Education of Peace, Human Rights, Democracy and Tolerance at USP (2008-2015); (c) Coordinator of Social Sciences at National Foundation of Post-Graduated Courses in Brazil (CAPES, 2004-2009); (d) Executive Secretary of the National Association for Research in Social Sciences (ANPOCS, 1997-2000); (d) President of Brazilian Society of Sociology (1991-1995). He did a post-doctoral internship at the Centre de Recherches Sociologiques sur le Droit et les Institutions Pénales, CESDIP, França (1994-95). He teaches Sociological Theory and Political Sociology. His main fields of research are violence, human rights, crime and social control, theory of justice and democracy, social public policies.

Melody Brown Burkins

Dr. Melody Brown Burkins is Associate Director of the John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding and Adjunct Professor of Environmental Studies at Dartmouth College. With over twenty years of experience in both academia and government, she is an advocate for policy-engaged scholarship across disciplines, advancing expertise in science policy and diplomacy to address global challenges, supporting young leaders, and investing in earth systems sustainability, civic engagement, and gender equality. Burkins serves as Chair of the U.S. National Committee for Geological Sciences (USNC-GS) and is a member of the National Academies’ Board on International Scientific Organizations (BISO) and Science Policy Exchange (SPE) Governing Council. Burkins served as policy advisor to U.S. Senator Leahy from 1999-2003 and spent over a decade at the University of Vermont developing strategic initiatives with local, state, national, and international partners in sustainability, innovation, and economic development. Dr. Burkins received her BS in geology from Yale and her PhD in earth, environmental, and ecosystem sciences from Dartmouth.

Chinedum Peace Babalola

Chinedum Peace Babalola is a Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, University of Ibadan (UI), Nigeria. She is first female Dean of Faculty of Pharmacy. Babalola obtained B.Pharm, MSc and PhD degrees from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria and completed a pre-doctoral fellowship at University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. She has received several fellowships and grants and has been a research scholar to various institutions abroad. Her research focuses on pharmacokinetics, pharmaceutical analysis and pharmacogenetics as a guide to dosage regimen in Blacks. She won MacArthur grant and set up Centre for Drug Discovery, Development and Production – first of its kind in Africa. She is the first female Pharmacist inducted Fellow Academy of Science and Fellow African Academy of Sciences. Others are FPSN, FPCPharm, NAPharm. In 2016, she was selected as one of 10 most influential female scientists in Nigeria (http://thepinknetworkng.com/10-most-influential-nigerian-women-in-science/).She has over 130 publications in journals, chapters and abstracts.

Paul Cannon

Prof Paul Cannon is both a physicist and an electronic engineer who works at the interface of the two disciplines. He is an academic at the University of Birmingham with considerable experience of working in government research laboratories and in industry.

Paul has held many leadership roles in addition to his research into the physics of the ionosphere, its effects on radio systems and space weather. Paul has served as QinetiQ Senior Fellow, Chief Scientist (Communications Division) and as the University Partnerships Director. He was Director of the Poynting Institute at University of Birmingham, Editor-in-Chief of the journal, Radio Science and is President of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI). Paul has served on Government committees and provides consultancy to a number of organisations.

He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2003 and appointed to the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2014.

Peter Haugan

Peter M Haugan is presently the elected chair of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC/UNESCO). He has for many years been a national nominated member for Scientific Committee on Ocean Research (SCOR), which is part of ICSU. He has been vice chair of the European Marine Board (EMB). He is deputy chair of the Norwegian National Commission for UNESCO during the last 8 years and has had close relations to ISSC through the connections between ISSC and UNESCO. He is a member of the University Board of the University of Bergen and holds an adjunct Research Director position at the Institute of Marine Research.

Evangelia Tastsoglou

Evangelia Tastsoglou is Professor of Sociology at Saint Mary’s University, in Halifax, Canada, Vice-President of the Canadian Ethnic Studies Association (2012-2016), and elected member of the EC of the International Sociological Association (2014-2018). She is the former president of RC 32 (the Research Committee on Women in Society) of the ISA (2010-2014) and has served as chairperson of the Department of Sociology and Criminology at Saint Mary’s University (2006-2012). Dr. Tastsoglou’s research, published in national and international peer-reviewed venues, engages feminist and intersectional perspectives on women, gender and various aspects of international migration; Canadian immigration and integration; violence, citizenship, transnationalism and diasporas. Among her co-authored and (co)edited books are: Women, Migration and Citizenship. Making Local, National and Transnational Connections (Ashgate, 2006); Women, Gender and Diasporic Lives.
